MICHAEL  BRET PHILLIPS
I AM KNOWN AS KITFOX. I AM A REGISTERED CALIFORNIA NATIVE AMERICAN. MY PEOPLE ARE THE CHUMASH. (ROLL NO. 49739) I HAVE BEEN PRACTICING THE CHUMASH ART OF MAKING TRADITIONAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS, JEWELRY, KNAPPING, SOAPSTONE CARVINGS, GAMES AND OTHER CRAFTS. MY FATHER ARTHUR EUGENE PHILLIPS CREATED ART IN STONE AND SILVER AND GRAND MOTHER ADELAIDE CARMEN BUDAR CREATED THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BASKETS. BOTH OF THEM  HAVE TAUGHT ME WHAT I KNOW TODAY ABOUT MY PEOPLE AND CULTURE. THROUGH MY CREATION AND CHILDREN, MY FATHER AND GRAND MOTHERS SPIRIT WILL LIVE ON AND MY PEOPLE AND CULTURE WILL LIVE ON AND WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN.
THE CHUMASH PEOPLE WERE KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE LARGEST TRIBES OF CALIFORNIA. THEY CREATED A SPECIAL WAY OF LIFE IN THE SANTA BARBARA AREA. ALTHOUGH SOME OTHER CALIFORNIA INDIANS HAVE SIMILAR CUSTOMS, BUT NO OTHER NATIVE AMERICANS LIVED EXACTLY THE SAME WAY. THERE INVENTIONS AND THE USE OF A PLANK CANOE (TOMAL), THEIR COMPLEX VILLAGES AND RELIGIOUS LIFE AND THEIR EXTRAORDINARY CRAFTSMANSHIP ARE WHAT MADE THE CHUMASH PEOPLE SO UNIQUE.
